WordPress-Based Online Stores

An online store built on the same foundation as your website.

WooCommerce turns WordPress into a full online store, with no monthly platform fee beyond hosting and no percentage taken off every sale.

What WooCommerce Actually Is

WooCommerce is not a separate platform sitting next to WordPress, it is a plugin that turns your WordPress site into a fully functional store. Product pages, a cart, checkout, order management, all of it runs on the same WordPress foundation as the rest of your content. If you already have a WordPress site, or you were planning to build one anyway, adding a store through WooCommerce extends what you already have instead of standing up a completely separate system that has to be maintained on its own.

That matters more than it sounds like it should. A lot of businesses end up running a website on one platform and a store on another, which means two logins, two sets of updates, and content that has to be kept in sync by hand. With WooCommerce, your blog posts, your service pages, and your product catalog all live in the same place.

What You Get With It

The biggest practical difference between WooCommerce and a hosted platform is cost structure. There is no percentage taken off every sale you make. You pay for hosting and standard payment processing, and that is it. For a store doing meaningful volume, that difference adds up fast over the course of a year.

You also get full control over the content and the codebase. Product descriptions, category pages, checkout messaging, none of it is locked behind a template you have to work around. If you want the checkout flow to behave a certain way or the product pages to be laid out differently than the default, that is genuinely possible instead of being a workaround. And because WooCommerce runs on WordPress, it gets the same enormous plugin ecosystem WordPress is known for, which means shipping calculators, tax handling, and marketing integrations almost always already have a solid, well-supported option instead of needing something custom-built.

Who This Is For

WooCommerce is the right call for a business that already has, or wants, a WordPress site with content beyond just products: service pages, a blog, local project photos, an about page that actually tells your story. It also fits a business that wants more direct control over the buying experience and is comfortable with a bit more responsibility for keeping the site maintained in exchange for that control.

If instead you want a store up and running as fast as possible with less to manage on your end, take a look at our Shopify store design page instead. And if you want the bigger picture on how we think about choosing between the two platforms in general, our e-commerce website design page lays out the comparison in full.

It Extends Your WordPress Site, Not Replaces It

A lot of the stores we build start as an extension of a standard WordPress build. If you already have a site with us, or you are planning one, we can design it from day one to support a store down the road, or add WooCommerce into an existing site without a full rebuild. Our WordPress website design page covers what that foundation looks like on its own, whether or not e-commerce is part of the plan yet.

Built From Pittsburgh, Working With Stores Across the Country

Higher Foundations is based in Beaver County, PA, right outside Pittsburgh, and WooCommerce projects fit naturally alongside the WordPress work we already do for local businesses. Most of the process happens over calls, email, and shared drafts, which means it works just as well for businesses outside the area. You can browse real projects we have launched to get a sense of the range of work.
